Owner, Lasso Data Partners
I specialize in using Alteryx, Excel, and Tableau to provide powerful business insights to a variety of clients in different industries. I’m a data driven accounting executive with deep analytical skills, creative problem solving capability, and experience improving operations for multi-unit retail and service businesses. I’m a passionate believer in the power of self-service business analytics to solve a myriad of data issues encountered by most businesses. Having worked with many different accounting, point-of-sale, payroll, and ERM software packages, I’m keenly aware that these tools don’t always provide the information or reports needed to adequately run a business or organization.
I provide a means to extract, transform and enhance data for reporting and analysis in a shorter time frame than a typical IT-driven support model. I’ve worked for public companies, closely-held family run businesses as well as entities owned or funded by private equity firms and am comfortable interacting with owners, managers, staff employees as well as executive boards. I believe that my 25+ years in accounting gives me excellent insight into how much having the right data matters in the overall success of an organization. Difficult doesn’t mean impossible when it comes to solving your problems.
Alex Cordero is a numbers guy and data whiz. He is more operationally focused than most CFO’s and is interested in learning the dynamics of the industries he works in so that he can think strategically as well as financially. He is a natural problem solver but more importantly, he knows the right questions to ask and identifies the areas of business which will have the most impact on the bottom-line.
Prior to launching Lasso Data Partners, Alex worked for more than 20 years for companies with multi-unit retail and service operations. Most recently, he served 10 years as CFO of Car Pool, LLC, a full-service car wash chain based in Richmond, VA. He was responsible for preparing financial statements, analyzing operations, and forecasting results. His focus was on building revenue, cutting costs, and developing forecasting tools for store level managers as well as the owners. He took the initiative to lead marketing efforts that included the use of electronic and print media to successfully increase new customer visits and frequency of visits.
Much of Alex’s early career was spent in the restaurant industry, with two different restaurant groups in Washington, D.C. As Controller for Austin Grills Inc., Alex managed all financial functions and played a key role in expanding the company from 2 to 8 units. He worked directly with owners, store managers and chefs to improve each restaurant’s financial performance. As part of the executive management team for Austin Grills, Alex also performed financial analysis for related restaurant partners Jaleo and Café Atlántico.
Before becoming Controller of Austin Grills, Alex was an Internal Auditor for Capital Restaurant Concepts in D.C. where he created and implemented internal controls for a multi-unit restaurant company. In that capacity, he identified embezzlement by an employee and helped the company eradicate fraud. Prior to that, Alex’s passion to be a part of the restaurant industry was sparked during his tenure as a store-level accountant for the corporate owned McDonald’s units. It was there that he laid a solid foundation for multi-unit analysis and accounting best practices.
Alex earned a BBA degree in Accounting from James Madison University in 1988 and passed the CPA exam in 1990. He has been working with spreadsheets since 1984 and more recently has become a power user of Alteryx. He excels in Excel, especially when it comes to utilizing pivot tables to provide ad-hoc reports or custom data analysis.
Alex draws on his real-life financial and operational experience with small growing businesses to help his clients make good strategic decisions. His own experience coupled with his prowess using powerful data analysis tools makes him a valuable partner.
